… and therefore a popular early theory about the U Idaho students knifed to death in their beds seems plausible: It was a random ugly encounter, during a night of barhopping, with someone who turned out to be a vicious asshole, who followed them home and killed them.

One online source claims this suspect is a graduate student at Washington State, which is just across the state line. Disgruntled, but for some other reason?

Yes, news conference confirms he’s a grad student there. I’m sticking with my theory that he’s a nut (information about his nuttiness is beginning to come out) who maybe made a play for one of the victims and was rejected, humiliated.
How, though, does one person knife four people to death? Even if they’re on different floors of a house?

It will be up to the police and prosecutor to present the answer to that “How, though?” in court.
The suspect apparently has a history of being rejected by women. If a pickup artist wrote Crime and Punishment would the plot involve a collegiate murder, rather than the aged pawnbrokers Raskolnikov took on?
