I am surprised by the settlement for half of the value. Do you suppose that the plaintiff felt a jury could find for Fox and thereby not get anything?
Will Fox actually pay or are there machinations by which they can have the amount reduced, perhaps by appealing to sympathetic judges?

I doubt Dominion was worried about the jury outcome; and remember that the jury might have INCREASED the award to Dominion. I think Dominion was – justifiably – confident things would go their way. But a 2-week trial represents a big outlay of lawyer’s fees for both sides, of course; and I suspect Dominion quite rationally decided to end things once Fox caved and not only gave them enormous damages (which, yes, Fox will inescapably pay to the penny), but also published a statement admitting that Fox News lied. A huge, unassailable, win for Dominion.
