Dagblog
University Diaries. Hosted by Margaret Soltan, professor of English at George Washington University. Boy is she pissed — mostly about athletics and funding, the usual scandals — but also about distance learning and diploma mills. She likes poems too. And she sings.

Well, it guarantees his election victory, but no – not staged.

Nope, you don’t have to stage gun violence in the USA. Crazy young men and AR-15s are everywhere. Likely some loser who wanted to make a name for himself. The last time this happened (with more limited firepower, fortunately), the loser was trying to get the attention of a young actress. Thwarted masculinity, mental illness, and access to weapons seem to fill in the center of this Venn diagram.
Not sure, though, that it won Trump the election just yet. We’ve got four months to go and this will be old news by October, no matter how much the Trump side tries to milk it. He’ll have his moment and then we’ll all move on, with far too little concern for the person who was actually killed in the incident or the people who were more seriously injured. I’d expect a small pro-Trump bump in the polls followed by a quick return to the status quo ante, which is still not good for the Democrats, but far from hopeless.

TAFKAU: I deeply hate to say it, but at this point Dems will never overcome the Iwo Jima shot of Trump’s fist, his bloody unbowed face, the flag, and the Secret Service scrum. The pic will be everywhere and its power will power the win. I’d be so happy to be wrong.
