‘The Louvre made … headlines a year ago when its director said in a leaked memo that visiting the museum was “a physical ordeal”.’

The Louvre, the Prado, and (I can attest) the Uffizi are all an ordeal, “like the Metro at rush hour,” and everyone’s too greedy to do anything about it.

    I wonder how much of that crowding is tourists who have to get that selfie with the same few primary exhibits. Years ago, at Chicago’s Art Institute, there was this mob jostling for a look at American Gothic and almost nobody paid any attention to Nighthawks, which at the time was in the same gallery.

    I think most of the crowding is just that.
