Dagblog
University Diaries. Hosted by Margaret Soltan, professor of English at George Washington University. Boy is she pissed — mostly about athletics and funding, the usual scandals — but also about distance learning and diploma mills. She likes poems too. And she sings.

Totally. She sounds like a responsible kid who works hard, so what better way of rewarding that than to allow her to take advantage of a one-time-only chance that she may never have again? My parents took me out of high school once for a short trip to Britain, and my grades didn’t even dip. It’ll work out.

Well, aside from the fact that the offspring of well-known university athletic shenanigan scold Margaret Soltan will be missing class for a *bowl game*…
Just kidding. She should head for Tampa and not think twice.
January 22nd, 2009 at 2:53PM
Brett: I KNOW! The irony ain’t exactly lost on me…
On the other hand, we all – UD, Mr UD, and La Kid – seem agreed that she should indeed go…
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:03PM
Please. It isn’t really up for debate, is it? CONGRATS to the entire group.
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:14PM
As if La Kid weren’t enough of a celebrity in Foggy Bottom…
Congrats again to UD and Mr. UD for La Kid’s talents–even if she’ll miss class time to do it. (Just kidding, of course.)
The question is…Will UD skip the game and just watch the halftime show?
January 22nd, 2009 at 5:54PM
I was going to contribute, but we seem to have arrived at the correct consensus.
January 22nd, 2009 at 6:08PM
Well, this was obviously a trick question to start with.
January 22nd, 2009 at 6:24PM
Of course! Just hound her into getting to part of Real Florida ™, which has nothing to do with theme parks, with the following as Pretty Darned Good:
1) Fort Desoto Park (an island on the southern tip of Pinellas County, in the Gulf). http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_Ft_Desoto.htm
2) Lettuce Lake Park (northern Tampa — it’s not really a lake…) http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/parks/parkservices/regionalsites.cfm?facilitydetailid=524
I know that they’ll be overscheduled, but it’s a shame to come to Tampa and only see parking lots…
January 22nd, 2009 at 7:16PM
UD – She should most definitely go to Tampa, and of course she should root for the Steelers!
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:32PM
I think this is actually one of the reasons why she SHOULD go:
the offspring of well-known university athletic shenanigan scold Margaret Soltan will be missing class for a *bowl game*
Congrats to her! On the inaugural stuff too.
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:43PM
That’s a rhetorical question, surely.
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:46PM
Did I miss something in the other posts … isn’t the group a GWU choir? As such, don’t the university’s existing rules policies on student travel (whether for basketball or forensics or battery automobile contests) apply?
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:25PM
Hi Stephen: No – it’s not a GW choir (though Ania’s in one of those — The Sirens, a female a capella group) — it’s a choir made up of Washingtonians from various schools and churches and choruses, many of whom, like Ania, have sung for a number of years at the Christmas in Washington event.
Ania just called the director of the group to say that she IS going to go to the Superbowl.

If the Boss asks you to do something, you do it. How do think the Big Man got in the band?
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:14PM
Thanks to my finely honed research skills, SEK, I now know what the hell you’re talking about.

January 23rd, 2009 at 12:10AM
Well, the change was made uptown and the Big Man joined the band …
January 23rd, 2009 at 12:57AM
Or,
"When E Street called up E Street,
Well, then La Kid joined the band
Drive from DC down to Tampa
She’ll sing and give the Boss a hand!
I’m gonna sit back right easy and laugh
‘Cause UD and the Mister won’t tune in until the half
And they’ll hit pause and freeze-frame,
Hit pause and freeze-frame,
Hit pause and freeze-frame…"
