My reaction as well. Trips to minor bowls — the kind a 6-6 team might play in — actually cost the university money, and generally attract relatively few alumni. They do allow the program to declare its season a success, and presumably they help recruiting, but that’s all just athletic department solipsism (to choose the more polite term).
