… the Grass Clippings War between Rand Paul and one of his neighbors. That event inspired UD to write one of her better songs, she thinks… drawn from The Mikado…
These guys seem to rub everyone – far and near – the wrong way, and sometimes open hostilities erupt.

“Hostilities erupt”
Shots ring out. Violence flares.

Bill R: Well, it didn’t go as far as guns with Rand Paul and his neighbor, but his neighbor wounded him badly enough for Paul to need serious hospitalization/recuperation, and to be in permanent pain; and his neighbor went to jail for assault. I’d call that an eruption.
Indeed, according to my calculations, the dude is still in jail. Read details of his assault here.

Oh yes, I quite agree. It’s your way of describing it I was poking fun at. Not very effectively it seems.
“Hostilities Erupt” is an example of what I call the “exculpatory passive” although it’s not passive voice exactly. It’s a little verbal to remove human agency from events.

Ah! I like that – exculpatory passive.

Yup – I mentally added that word.
